Why Is Hormone Replacement Therapy Controversial?

Low sex drive, decreased muscle mass, erectile dysfunction, mood swings and hair loss. As if those conditions weren’t enough, there are plenty more symptoms of Low Testosterone (Low T) that can affect your physical and emotional state, and your overall health. For men aged 30 or older, testosterone levels naturally begin to drop. And for millions of men, hormone replacement therapy has rejuvenated the vitality Low T has taken from them. So…

Why is hormone replacement therapy controversial?

Hormone replacement therapy (HRT) has been the subject of hundreds of studies over the years. The mixed results of those studies are in large part, the source of “controversy,” or, the range of varying opinions on HRT for men.

For example, small studies in the early 2000s found that men with heart disease who received testosterone therapy saw only slight improvements. Another study found that HRT only widened healthy arteries but had no effect on angina pain.

Yet another more recent (and larger) study of 83,000 men revealed that men whose testosterone levels returned to normal were 24 percent less likely to have a heart attack and 36 percent less likely to experience a stroke.

Now consider this: A 2013 study published by the Journal of the American Medical Association reported a 30 percent jump in the risk of stroke, heart attack and death among men undergoing testosterone therapy. See what we mean?

You’re unique. Now your hormone replacement therapy is, too.

For many men, HRT can rejuvenate sex drive and energy, improve mood, increase muscle mass and more. For others, the benefits may not be so obvious. The point is, HRT isn’t for everyone, and if you decide to pursue it, choose experts who know how to evaluate your condition, then tailor your treatments around your specific health goals.
