Why is testosterone important in men?

In men, testosterone plays a key role in the development of reproductive tissues in the testes and prostate. It promotes secondary sexual characteristics like increased muscle and bone mass and the growth of body hair. Testosterone also helps the male body promote health and longevity by protecting men from chronic diseases like type 2 diabetes, metabolic syndrome and cardiovascular disease.

What type of TRT is right for me?

Testosterone replacement therapy is available in several forms, including:

  • Transdermal skin patch
Androderm is a skin patch worn on the inner arm or upper body and is applied once every 24 hours. This medication is absorbed through the skin, enters the bloodstream and helps the body reach normal testosterone levels.
  • Gels
Gels such as AndroGel and Testim are applied once every 24 hours and are absorbed through the skin, similar to a transdermal patch. AndroGel, Axiron and Fortesta are also available in a pump that delivers the amount of testosterone prescribed by your doctor. Natesto is a gel that is applied to the inside of the nostrils.
  • Mouth patch
Striant is a tablet that adheres to the upper gums, just above the incisors. It continuously releases testosterone into the blood through the oral tissues and is applied twice daily.
  • Injections and implants
Testosterone can also be injected directly into the muscles, or implanted as pellets in the soft tissue. Using these methods, the body slowly absorbs the testosterone into the bloodstream. The frequency of testosterone injections or implants will be determined by your doctor but can be anywhere from every seven days to four months.
