Difference Between Bioidentical and Other HRT Therapies

by Shearly (SU)

At SynergenX Health, we offer hormone replacement therapies (HRT) to help replenish what menopause and other conditions can take away. There is a lot of confusion these days about hormone replacement therapy. For example, many people do not know that male HRT can be treated with targeted doses of testosterone. For those wondering about the differences between bioidentical and other conventional HRT therapies, the main difference is that bioidentical hormones (usually derived from plants) are a perfect match for the ones your body naturally produces. Hence, the term, “bio-identical”, meaning that your body cannot tell the difference from those that would normally be created by your own living tissues.

Bioidentical Hormones Vs. Traditional HRT

Hormones are chemicals secreted by specific glands. These substances act like chemical messengers, communicating with different organ and body systems, and regulating the different functions of your body, such as sex drive, appetite, weight, energy levels and even mood. In males, HRT is often used to treat low testosterone (also known as Low-T). In women, the primary hormones are estrogen and progesterone.

Until very recently, synthetic and or animal derived hormones were the only solution for those experiencing low hormone levels due to natural aging, menopause, certain surgeries or other conditions. Premarin and Provera are examples of synthetic and animal based hormones. Made from the urine of pregnant mares, the estrogens are a different size and shape than those produced by humans. Several of these bind rather tightly to estrogen receptors, making them overly stimulating.

Bioidentical hormones, on the other hand, are derived from plants. The size and shape of the molecule are an exact match for human receptors. Therefore, they are much less likely to cause unwanted side effects. Bioidentical hormone replacement therapy may also offer better heart protection than conventional hormone replacement therapy.

Studies have shown that HRT can improve the quality of life for many patients. Hormone replacement therapy can also reduce the symptoms of menopause, such as hot flashes, vaginal dryness, irritability, and sleep disturbances. It can also reduce your risk of osteoporosis (in both men and women), and it can help men yield the benefits of a reasonable testosterone level.
